God is Better Than…

My one word this
year is Joy. You can read about it HERE.
The verses for me
this year are Psalm 19:7-15. I decided to look it up in other translations. I
encourage you do the same–with any verse or passages in the Bible. It helps
you really get the entire meaning and looking at the same thing with new words
can open your eyes to new personal revelation and application for you life!
My verses in the
Message version jumped out.  And as I
read and took them in, I thought why not take them in with you! Mondays you
and I can meditate together. I’ll call them Meditation Mondays. No, I’m not going
all “ohm” on you. Meditation simply means to reflect, contemplate or
to think on.
Wednesday, I’ll be tackling  the latter half of verse 7. (It will be more
of a devotion/teaching day.) I hope you’ll come and discover the joy in
something as simple yet deep as light.
The
revelation of God is whole
    and
pulls our lives together.
The
signposts of God are clear
    and
point out the right road.
The
life-maps of God are right,
    showing
the way to joy.
The
directions of God are plain
    and
easy on the eyes.
God’s
reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
    with
a lifetime guarantee.
The
decisions of God are accurate
    down
to the nth degree.
God’s
Word is better than a diamond,
    better
than a diamond set between emeralds.
You’ll
like it better than strawberries in spring,
    better
than red, ripe strawberries.
There’s more: God’s Word warns us of
danger
    and
directs us to hidden treasure.
Otherwise
how will we find our way?
    Or
know when we play the fool?
Clean
the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh!
    Keep
me from stupid sins,
    from
thinking I can take over your work;
Then I
can start this day sun-washed,
    scrubbed
clean of the grime of sin.
These
are the words in my mouth;
    these
are what I chew on and pray.
Accept
them when I place them
    on
the morning altar,
O God,
my Altar-Rock,
    God,
Priest-of-My-Altar.
This is a big chunk,
so let’s pick out verse 7 to meditate on today, since it’s the verse we’ll look
at more closely on Wednesday. (*Note: I’m not rigid, if a another verse struck
you, by all means hide it in your heart and keep it close to you today!)
Today’s
meditation:
The
revelation of God is whole and
pulls our lives together.
The
signposts of God are clear and
point out the right road.
Hints to help: How is this verse true in your life? What are some signposts God gave you to point you to the right road? Reflect on how this verse has been true in your life. Ask God to give you the desire to spend more time in his word, to make you whole and to pull areas of your life that need wholeness together.
Today’s question: Verse 10 says, God’s word is better than
strawberries in spring, better than red, ripe strawberries. What is God’s Word (and God in general) better
than to you?
Here’s mine: God and His Word is
better than a dark chocolate Hershey bar with almonds complimented with a
Cinnamon Dolce latte from Starbucks! (And that’s pretty stinkin good!)
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,O Lord, my strength and my
Redeemer.

  1. Haha, your "better than" made my mouth water. This morning, God's Word is better than sleep. It truly is. And I'm thankful I got to read your blog right on the heels of my quiet time because it reminded me to be thankful for those quiet moments in the morning…

I'm really excited about Meditation Mondays. What a great way to start off each week!

    1. Oooh, sleep is so nice. Yep, God truly is better than that. Glad you're looking forward to the MMs, I'm looking forward to writing them! 🙂

  2. Jessica, like Melissa, my mouth is watering! Mmmmm, I would have to say that God's word is better than Brahm's hot fudge/ peanut butter fudge sundae…with peanut butter cup ice cream. Sigh. God's word is better than a Sunday nap. God's word is better than an icy Diet Dr. Pepper from Sonic. God's word is better than getting a relaxing pedicure with a Diet Dr. Pepper in hand.

Okay, okay, I will stop. 😉

    1. Oh wow, you have such good ones! That sundae sounds delish! 🙂

  3. I'll be coming back to read that meditation again…loved it.

And God's Word is better than kissing (and breathing in) the tops of my children's heads.

    1. Oh I love this one, probably b/c I do so love to kiss! 🙂

  4. God's Word is better than summer days on warm beaches, steaming cheesy lasagna fresh from the oven and Kohl's clearance sales.

I loved "The signposts of God are clear and point out the right road." Truth.

    1. mmmm…cheesy lasagna. I'm getting a running theme here of food which is interesting since God is referred to as food and to be tasted so often in scripture! We have a Kohl's but I always forget it's there.

  5. There was so much there, I think I'll be chewing all day:) For me, the beginning really stood out, all about directions, signs, maps–that's where I think I'll focus today mostly. And God's Word? It's better than an entire week in a secluded cabin all by myself:)

    1. I'm gonna be chewin all day myself! Oh man, a secluded cabin sounds heavenly. 😉

  6. God's Word is better than tipping your face up to the sun on the first spring day after a long winter. It's better than a big snuggly hug from my husband and the sound of my kids chatting as they come in after a day at school.

    1. Oh that's a great picture! And I do love doing that. Great ones!

  7. God's word is better than a whole week off work! And that's reeeeeeally good. 😉

    1. Indeed!!! It is reeeeeeeeeally good!

  8. Jess, I LOVE your verses!! Especially the part about God keeping us from "stupid sins." I've lost count of those. 🙂 God's word is better than absolutely anything this blonde brain can come up with. He is IT!

    1. Thanks, Donna! I am really enjoying taking time to unpack and meditate on them!

…and anything better than this brunette coudl come up with as well! 🙂

  9. God's word is better than the space heater warming my toes. 🙂 It doesn't sound like much, but my space heater is one of my favorite things.

    1. It is much! I love, love, love, my space heater. I stay cold! So that is BIG! 🙂

  10. God's word is better than FOOD which is something we all crave. I find it so interesting that satan tempted Christ with food.

But food satisfies for only so long. That's why we live by the word of God!!! Thanks for the reminder!

    1. Yes! Yes! Yes! Excellent point, Ruth! So true.

  11. I've bookmarked this post. My Women's Ministry has decided to do the theme of JOY for our spring program. Coincidence? I think NOT. LOL

God's Word is better than lox and cream cheese on a salt bagel–which is pretty darn great!

    1. How awesome is that! I hope you'll let them know about Mondays and Wednesdays here so they can add to their study! 🙂

I've never had lox. You eat the most interesting things, but then I think you may be one of the most interesting people I know in person and online! 🙂

  12. "Joy" is such a wonderful word, Jessica! And a beautiful prayer and verse to go with it. May God work in His amazing fullness in and through your word and may your year be just blessed! Thank you for sharing!

    1. Thank you so much, Joanne, for your prayer. Praying blessings on your year as well, sweet friend!

  13. Wonderful post. Like you, The Message really jumps out at me and is a favorite translation. Eugene P is quite the scholar and has a way with wording things:)

Love your word for this year and the thoughts behind it. Mine is FOCUS. The Lord has shown me quite a few Scriptures that contain that very word. Often my focus is on the wrong things when it needs to be firmly fixed on Him.

Hmmm…God and His word are better than any book I'll ever read or write. I could go on and on….

    Thanks for the pondering:)
