A Weekend BBQing

It all started on Thursday. Setting up tents, bringing out the trailer and getting things ready for smoking on Friday.

TP and I are part of a life group at our church called the Cornerstone Q-Crew. We BBQ! Our close friends are involved and the big guy on the left, one of our closest friends heads it up!

This is the second year we’ve been competing and the second year we went to Springfest which is a biggie for us.

Of course, it isn’t Springfest without the weather freezing us out and the rain soaking us.

Everyone slipped on mudboots and worked in the rain, taking cover under tents when we could and naturally, we let our kids have a blast in the rain on the rides–once it stopped lightning. Gah! How bad of a mom do you think I am? 🙂

Friday night we hung out and fed people, only this year because of the rain, very few showed up. We have more shoulder, ribs, brisket, butt, chicken, and pasta salad than some small countries. That’s kind of sad isn’t it? We’ll be giving it all away and freezing some of it.

Saturday, we spent most of the day presenting to judges, then I picked up my kiddos and we all walked around, remembering when we were kids and loved fair rides, of course most of us looked at the ground or pretended to be in gross conversation while our children spun around and around, just a glance and we’d all puke!

Remember when you didn’t get sick to ride rides? I miss the fun and excitement. Seeing it in my little boy made my day. My daughter isn’t young enough to act giddy, mostly she spent it talking to friends who showed up and begging me for more money as if BBQ wasn’t enough, she needed lemonade, chicken on a stick, fried oreos, a corndog, and cotton candy. Sigh.

This is our trailer. The guys built it and everything
themselves! So rustic and cute, though I doubt that’s
what they said while building it!
This is part of our entrance decor into the tent
for the judges and ambassadors! We have a genius
decorator on our team. It’s not me. 🙂

Here’s a few more pics!

I’m freezing! I don’t do cold!
I’m not sure what my husband is up to
but that’s one of his mischievous grins.
What do you think?

I’m exhausted today. I’ll be honest. We didn’t win the grand prize, but the buzz around the BBQ tents were, we treated the judges and ambassadors like no one else, our decor was #1 and we were the friendliest people. Other teams came by just to see our set up and to introduce themselves. So no prizes.  But we showed Jesus. And we didn’t hand out one tract! (I’m not a fan of tracts in any form)

That’s what it’s all about. Showing love and making relationships.

What did you do over the weekend? Do you like BBQ? Have you ever been on any kind of team that competes? What was it?

  1. 1. I spent my weekend steaming tablecloths, setting tables, loading/unloading equipment, and singing! Notice, the word "sleep" wasn't in there anywhere…

    2. I LOVE BBQ, and I can testify that the Q-Crew rocks it out. Yummm!

    3. I was a big ole' nerd in high school, and was on the "quiz bowl" team. Some people shot hoops – I pushed a button on a buzzer. I paid for my part of Anna Marie's birth with the savings bonds I won!

    Love the pictures this morning!

    1. Sorry I didn't bring you any! LOL

  2. Looks like a blast! Rain and all!

    1. Girl, it was!

  3. That looks like so much fun! What an adventure in the rain! I'm from Texas, so BBQ is always part of the monthly menu for us.

I spent the weekend plotting and doing some characterization on my new story. Fun times.

    1. I'm doing some plotting too. Loved your post about it!

  4. Fun! I love BBQ, but I'm from Oklahoma. I think they'd kick you out if you didn't love BBQ. I went to my local ACFW meeting on Saturday. It was a blast. We stayed late chatting about conference. I love that group of women.

    1. Well, you're moving in with me anyway so if you didn't… lol

I wish we had a local ACFW! Waaah!

  5. Looks like fun…except the cold and rain. This Arizona girl hates both. Well, I like the occasional rain…but I like to be curled up indoors with a book when it happens!

Um, yeah, this weekend was exhausting to me too. Friday night our Sunday school class put on a dinner/dance (gasp! at a Baptist church!) for an older class. It was fun but took up all evening. Saturday I had to clean and make the cake for my husband's family birthday party (THIS weekend is the friend birthday party…) on Sunday, as well as take some friends a meal who'd just had a baby. As well as receive feedback from a beta reader who was pretty harsh. So there was some crying in there too (ha, I really need to learn to take me some feedback!).

All in all, a good weekend with building relationships and serving others. But tiring. I'm already looking forward to next Sunday when we have NO PLANS except church. I'm almost giddy over it. 😀

    1. Loved your yardwork post, Linds! We had a nice big firepit so that was good!

  6. Oh bummer about the rain. 🙁 But, BBQ…mmm…do I like BBQ? That's a bit like asking if I like oxygen. Love. 🙂

I had a fine weekend…nothing exciting…a little writing, a little catching up and finally, finally a LOT of sleeping.

    1. You also have a nasty habit of wiping sauce on your jackets! LOL

    2. LOL! Every time I drive by Famous Dave's, I think of Mel. 😀

  7. What an adventure! You already read about my "soccer adventure." Other than that, nothing unusual. Do like to barbecue, but don't do it too often.
    Fun post!

    1. I did read about it. Loved that post!

  8. Yum. Fun. And I get you on the cold (I have that same blue sweater).

I coach young girls in soccer. I like BBQ. And I wrote and edited a boatload this weekend.

  9. Oh, LOVE BBQ! I eat mine w/ coleslaw and mustard on top…that's how I was raised:) This weekend I went to a writer's workshop on Saturday and spent yesterday at church alllllll day with my girls while they practiced for their Fine Arts competition for church next weekend.

I shivered just looking at your pics – I don't do cold either. Glad you had fun:)

    1. Susan, are you A/G? We just had Fine Arts. Getting ready for Nationals! 🙂

  10. Comment got eaten…tyring again! I'm determined to make this work!

Love BBQ! I'm no so much a cold and rainy gal either. Give me warmth & sunshine!

Saturday, I attended my local ACFW MozArks meeting where the fab Kathleen Y'barbo was guest speaker. Sunday, I got "churched up" and the service was awesome. Last night, I spent far too long working on today's blog post.

Love your photos today! You made me hungry, Jess!

    1. All that commenting worked your appetite up! LOL

  11. I got to spend a warm afternoon at the park! Be jealous, you know you are. 😉

But I'm jealous of that BBQ, oh delight! But fried oreos? That is just a crime against the Oreo. I should apologize for you right now by eating one. Unfortunately, I don't have one within reach. 🙁

    Love the pics!

    1. I am jealous! 🙂 I'm not a fan of fried Oreos, but my kiddo loves them. LOL

  12. Looks like you had a great time! I love a good BBQ and I'm a cotton candy fanatic!

    1. We really did have a ball! I had to wash my clothes a billion times to get the smell of smoke out. Cotton candy = blech to me! LOL

  13. Rats! Now I'm hungry. Blogging is not good for the overweight and easily led astray.

We did a little cooking for the Lord this weekend as well. I was a chauffer/chaperone for our church youth group on their visit to a church in a poorer area of town. They took all the makings for a big dinner and fed about 100 poeple.

  14. I LOVE to BBQ! What an awesome time. Thank you for sharing your pics with us. Love them!

  15. That sounds awesome! And what a great ministry too. That is what it's all about. 🙂

  16. Ohhh, I wish I could try some of your BBQ! Looks like fun and very cool everyone voted your tent the nicest. 🙂
